August Tasks For The Northwest

August is a crucial month for gardeners in the Northwest. With the warm summer weather and abundant rainfall, plants grow quickly during this time of year. However, it’s important to stay on top of garden tasks to ensure that your plants stay healthy and thriving. Here are some essential tasks to focus on in August:

1. Harvest Vegetables and Fruits

The bounty of the garden is at its peak in August. Many vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and zucchinis are ready to be harvested during this time. Fruits like blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are also abundant. Make sure to harvest regularly to keep plants producing and prevent over-ripening. Additionally, remove any diseased or damaged fruits and vegetables to prevent the spread of disease.

2. Water and Mulch

With the warm temperatures and dry weather, it’s important to water plants consistently throughout August. Make sure to water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Adding a layer of mulch around plants can help retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature. Mulch can also suppress weed growth and promote soil health.

3. Weed and Deadhead

Weeds can quickly take over a garden during the summer months. It’s important to stay on top of weeding and remove weeds before they go to seed. Additionally, deadheading (removing spent blooms) can promote continued blooming and prevent plants from going to seed too early.

4. Prune and Train

August is a good time to prune and train fruit trees and berry bushes. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased wood. Thin out crowded branches to increase air circulation and sunlight penetration. Training young trees and bushes to their desired shape can also be done during this time.

5. Plan for Fall

August is a good time to start planning for fall gardening. Consider what crops you want to plant for a fall harvest and start seeds indoors if necessary. Additionally, begin preparing garden beds by removing old plants, adding compost, and amending soil as needed. Fall is also a good time to plant bulbs for spring blooms.
